Summary

Colour photograph of an original ambrotype portrait of the Lashmar Family. The ambrotype has been hand-coloured, with blue and pink added to some of their clothing and pink added to the cheeks of the family. Thomas Young Lashmar seated next to his wife Jane (nee Rushall), who appears to be holding infant son William. Their eldest child, John Sherbourne, is standing in the back, Jane Hannah is standing on the left, Eliza is standing on the right, and Thomas and Fanny are seated in their father's lap.

Historical information

Thomas Young Lashmar was born in approximately 1814 in Brighton, Sussex, England. He departed from London and arrived in Port Adelaide on board the 'Augustus' on 30 December 1843. In 1853 he married Jane Rushall, and they had seven children: John Sherbourne (b.1841), Jane Hannah (b.1847), Eliza (b.1850), Thomas (b.1852), Fanny (b.1855), William (b.1857), and Harry (b.1860). The family lived in Mitcham where Thomas worked as a butcher with eldest son John Sherbourne and later moved to Port Lincoln and then Kangaroo Island where he conducted sheep runs with son John, and bought a number of ketches, sailing between Port Adelaide and the outports. Thomas died on 17 December 1861 at the Terminus Hotel on North Terrace, aged 47 years. Jane died in November 1864, aged 43 years.
