Historical information

Cyril Richard Cole, son of Albert John Cole and Margaret Ellen (nee Mortimer), was born on 27 January 1894 at Mintaro, South Australia. He studied at the School of Forestry, University of Adelaide, and was working as an assistant forester in Medindie, South Australia, before he enlisted with the AIF on 20 July 1915. He served as a private, No. 74, with the 32nd Battalion, A Company, embarking from Adelaide in November 1915, and returning to Australia in April 1919. Cyril Cole then worked as a Forestry Officer in Canberra until the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. He enlisted, VX11406 in April 1940 and served as Lieutenant Colonel with 1 Forestry Company, and was stationed in Northern England and Scotland since Paris had already fallen by the time his unit arrived. He was appointed Captain in June 1940, Major in October 1940, and then Lieutenant Colonel and in command of a Forestry Group from August 1941. Cyril Cole and many others in his unit were the first Forestry degree graduates from Adelaide University. He received the honour of Officer of the Order of the British Empire for his valuable services in forestry work in 1944. He returned to Australia in November 1943 and then served in New Guinea in 1944. He died in 1989.
