Historical information

No. 63945 Private Leslie William Cockshell was born in Terowie in 1898 to William George Cockshell and wife Laura Eliza Crowhurst. He was working as a clerk in Laura, South Australia, before he enlisted with the AIF on 21 July 1917, aged 18. He served with the Army Medical Corps, alongside his friends No. 63959 Private Frederick Pritchard and No. 63946 Private Maynard Johnson Cole. He embarked with his unit from Fremantle, Western Australia, on board the HMAT A36 'Boonah' on 29 October 1918, served in France, Belgium and Germany, was transferred to the 3rd Casualty Clearing Station, and returned to Australia in December 1919. He married Una Buckland in 1927 and died in 1964.
