Historical information

No. 36946 Private Maynard Johnson Cole, son of William James Cooper Cole (1858-1938) and Alice Esther nee Johnson (1858-1915) of Laura, South Australia. He worked as a clerk with the Traffic Audit Office, Adelaide, before he enlisted with the AIF on 4 September 1917, aged 19. He served with the Army Medical Corps, and was later transferred to the 50th Battalion. He embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia, on board the HMAT A36 'Boonah' on 29 October 1918, and returned to Australia on 12 July 1919. He married Kathleen Mary Hall (died 1944) in 1922, and later remarried, to Mavis Jean Cole, with whom he had a daughter, Susan. He died on 14 December 1952.
