Summary

Digital copy of an embroidered cushion cover purchased by Ernest Arthur Frost in Cairo whilst on active service during World War I and sent home to family in Manoora. Blue cotton sateen with embroidered text reading 'Souvenir from Egypt, Cairo' within a floral wreath design and 'From Ern to Mother' underneath. An embroidery of a banner featuring the flags of the Allied Forces sits in the middle of the design, with '1916' underneath.

Historical information

The textile keepsakes often referred to as 'Souvenir of Egypt' were very popular during the First World War due to their colourful nature and the fact they were easy to fold and post home. Soldiers bought them while travelling to or from the Western Front (via Egypt), or while they were serving or training in Egypt.
