Summary

Guests gather around a 'cauldron' at Wests Theatre, Hindley Street, Adelaide, prior to the gala premier of the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games motion picture. The Advertiser newspaper reported, "Malcolm Hay, of the Adelaide University Athletic Club, ... entered the theatre through a guard of honor formed by SA Olympic competitors and 50 men and women athletes, and then held the torch in salute to the official guests assembled on the dress circle. As he dipped it towards the 'cauldron', red paper streamers caught alight, but Hay smothered the flames and slightly burnt his hand."
