Summary

First of two series of mainly 120 format B&W negatives assigned a WW prefix by Grimmett. This first series dates from 1957 to 6 June 1971. Initially Grimmett did not assign a prefix but over time they were intermittently assigned a WW prefix. This prefix became standard from number 878 dated 8 February 1969. The WW sequence was reset to WW001 on 13 June 1971 after it reached WW1001 on 6 June 1971. It is believed the 'WW' refers to mainly Adelaide social photographs taken for the Australian Women's Weekly. The two WW series have been maintained in their original chronological order, the third number in the file name being that assigned by Vic Grimmett to the envelope containing the negatives.

Historical information

"Vic Grimmett has been a keen photographer all his life thanks to his father, legendary test cricketer, Clarrie Grimmett, who carried a cine and a still photographer on all his cricketing tours. After four years in the RAAF, during which time he flew thirty raids over Germany as a twenty year old Lancaster Bomber pilot, Vic returned to Adelaide and to his job in the South Australian public service. Realising after a few years that this was not the life he wanted, Vic turned to his hobby of photography, hoping one day to become a professional. Luck was with him right from the start and within just a few months he was taking pictures for the Australian Women's Weekly, as well as for the motion picture industry. During his forty years behind the camera he also completed assignments for Cleo, The Bulletin, Mode and Woman's Day. Vic photographed nearly two thousand weddings and many of this state's fashion accounts. Other work included publicity photographs for ADS7, ABS2 and television magazines TV Times, TV Week and TV Radio Extra. He also produced football team photos of SANFL, VFL and Teal cup sides."
