Historical information

William Chudleigh started life in Devon, and was a farm labourer at age 14, but later undertook signwriting, graining, and embossing. He married Mary Eliza Franks as his second wife in Gawler in 1877. His first wife's surname may be Hill, as their 3 children have Hill in their names. Prior to emigrating to Australia, Chudleigh lived in Plymouth and Truro (Cornwall). He answered an advertisement for a 3 year contract for a firm based in Flinders Street, Adelaide, and arrived in Port Adelaide on the 'City of Adelaide' on 31 July 1869. His wife died and their 3 children went to live with grandparents in Devon. They emigrated to Port Adelaide on assisted passages on the 'Nebo', arriving in 1882.
