Historical information

Information given by a researcher: 'Arthur Ridley Reed, born 12th Dec 1895 in the Colac Hotel, Port Adelaide where his father was the licenced victualler. Bank Clerk on enlistment in WW1. Worked as a Station Clerk and wool classer in SA and on Irwin House, Dongara, WA. Went to New Britain to Rabaul in 1933, began a dairy farm which was wiped out in the 1938 eruption, given a grant to begin again. Was in New Britain when the Japanese Imperial Army invaded in January 1942. Held prisoner in Rabaul until July 1942 when he became one of the POW's on the "Montevideo Maru" which was sunk by a USA submarine while on transit to Hainan Island (think it is still listed as Australia's largest maritime loss of life). Japanese government has presented the Australian Government the records they held about the sinking. They are now in the Australian War Memorial. AR Reed (always known as Ridley to his friends) was one of the 300 plus civilians and 800 plus military personnel on the ship'.

Information given by a researcher: The '4 cylinder Excelsior was sold in its US home market as a Henderson. In export markets such as Australia they were sold as Excelsior American X'.
