Historical information

Doug Mackenzie enlisted in the Australian Army in 1942. From February to May 1943 he attended a course at the LHQ School of Radio Physics on South Head, Sydney. While there, on 14 April he observed what he believed was a small submarine nearby in Sydney Harbour which caused a disturbance in which depth charges were laid and involved a patrol boat of the Australian Navy. Despite an official report being logged in the Naval 'Daily Narrative' there was no mention made in the Sydney Press of the incident. In 2007 a 'Sixty Minutes' television episode recalled the May 1942 attempt by a Japanese midget submarine to enter Sydney Harbour, prompting the writer to make this declaration of his 1943 sighting of another submarine.
