Historical information

The following information was provided by a researcher: 'This is Mabel Hesketh Haslam, born 5 Dec 1875 in Kent Town SA and died 18 April 1949, in Millswood S.A. She was the second child of William Haslam (1850-1898) and Annie Jenkyns Roach (1851-1929). William was a politician until his sudden death in 1898. He had a town in SA named after him. Mabel's mother was the daughter of the well-known John and famously-kind Jane Roach, of Burra. The Haslam family owned and occupied the Heritage-listed house "Heywood", noted for its spectacular gardens and grounds, which they established. They also had very close links with the Globe Timber Mills. Prior to her marriage, Mabel was an acclaimed Shakespearean actress in Adelaide and was often mentioned in the social columns of the Adelaide newspapers for various occasions she either organised or attended. She married Ceylon plantation manager / owner, Everard Fraser Home (1877-1940) in 1909, and spent the next 31 years in Ceylon before returning to Adelaide for her final years. Two of her sisters also married plantation owners and resided in Ceylon. Mabel and Everard's two children were foundation students at Scotch College and Presbyterian Girls College. Their son, Fraser, was tragically killed in a diving accident at Victor Harbor at the age of 17. Daughter Constance Mary married a plantation owner in Ceylon, and after 30 years there, retired to England. Some of Mabel Haslam's uncles and male cousins were clergy in the Wesleyan church of South Australia. All in all, she was from a most remarkable family.'
