Hubbe, Samuel Grau, 1895-1896, 1974, Manuscript, PRG 1415/2/117
Journal kept by Samuel Hubbe during the Western Australian Stock Route Expedition, which was under his command. Started on Friday 1st November 1895 under the heading 'Journal of Leader of Western Australia Stock Route Expedition', it includes daily entries detailing their activities. (The length of the entries appears to relate to what was happening on a given day.) At the end of the journal is a newspaper report of the expedition, and another on the journey of English surveyor, David Carnegie, across similar country. Also included with the journal is (2) a 'list of medicines etc. taken by Mr S.G. Hubbe for use during overland trip to Western Australia' (2 pages); (3) 'chemicals taken by Pastoral Board for use in Far North' 8 December 1896 (1 page); (4) 'Forensic medicine' by P.W. Leslie which lists causes of sudden death and then elaborates on their nature (1 page); (5) a testimonial presented to Hubbe by his colleagues at the Surveyor General's Office prior to his departure in October 1895, bearing 62 signatures including that of William Strawbridge (2 pages); and (6) an unsigned document parodying official government orders, October 1895 (3 pages). Also includes a typescript copy of the journal which was typed in 1974.
