Summary

The iron ship 'Stronsa', 2053 tons, anchored in an unidentified port [iron ship, 2053 tons, ON86225, 269.0 x 41.6 x 24.3. Built 1882 (9) T Royden and Sons, Liverpool. Owners: Sandbach, Tinne and Co., registered Liverpool; 1901 Thomas Shute; c.1913 to Argentine owners without change of name; 1916 to AC Anderson, Copenhagen and refitted as a sail training ship and renamed 'Valkyrien'. Broken up in 1923].

General notes

One of the ships owned by Sandbach, Tinne and Co., Liverpool.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.

[Charles Brooks was master of the 'Stronsa'. The ship was built in Liverpool in 1882 and he captained her until his death in Shanghai in 1897. I believe the ship was originally built for the Chinese labour market to the West Indies but later worked in the Pacific. I think it was decommissioned around 1911. It was owned by the Liverpool firm of Sandbach Tinne. Information provided by John Morrison, UK.]
