Summary

The iron ship 'Eskdale', 1313 tons, in an unidentified port [iron ship, 1285 tons, later 1313 tons. ON69238, 225.5 x 36.2 x 22.1. Built 1873 (2) Whitehaven Shipbuilding Co, Whitehaven. Owners: John D Newton, registered Liverpool. 1890 W Lowden and Co.] A researcher has provided the following information: on the 1871 census for the United Kingdom the SS Eskdale was anchored at Tyne Dock Jarrow, her master was recorded as one Thomas Smith (born 1827).

One of the ships owned by The Dale Line / J.D. Newton and Co., Liverpool.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
