Summary

The iron barque 'Limari', 617 tons, under sail [iron barque, 600 tons, later 617 tons. ON60030. 175.4 x 27.8 x 18.2. Built 1867 (11) A Stephen and Sons, Glasgow. Owners: Samuel Lowden (of Whitehaven, Cumberland) registered Liverpool, later Lowden Edgar and Co. registered Liverpool, eventually passed to Lever Murphy and Co. registered Valparaiso. Wrecked in the famous gale of Sept. 1. 1902 at Algoa Bay, South Africa when a large number of sailing ships were dashed to pieces].

One of the ships owned by Lowdens Fleet / J. Lowden and Co., Liverpool.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
