Summary

The steel ship 'Sierra Ventana', 1907 tons, as 'Naiad' [steel ship, 1907 tons, ON96298, 265.0 x 39.7 x 23.7. Built 1889 (5) WH Potter and Sons, Liverpool. Owners: Thompson, Anderson and Co. (Sierra Shipping Co.) registered Liverpool; sold and renamed 'Naiad' about 1903 by J Walmsley and Co., registered Liverpool. Captured by a submarine 15 Dec. 1916, 25 miles SE by E from Bishop Rock, and subsequently sunk. No lives lost].

One of the ships owned by The Sierra Line / Thompson, Anderson and Co., Liverpool.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
