Summary

The iron ship 'Duncow', 1715 tons, at Port Adelaide [iron ship, 1715 tons. ON78806, 252.0 x 40.0 x 23.5. Built 1878 (7) W. Doxford and Sons, Sunderland. Owners J. Houston and Co. registered Liverpool. Became the Italian Michele Bianchi. Figured in a sensational incident in 1897 when the vessel was abandoned at Kangaroo Island in an apparently hopeless position but was later salvaged and towed to Port Adelaide. One of the ships owned by J. Houston and Co., Liverpool.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
