Summary

The four masted steel barque 'Seafarer', 2211 tons, in an unidentified port [steel 4 mast barque, 2211 tons, ON93771, 281.6 x 41.2 x 24.6. Built 1888 (4) WH Potter and Sons, Liverpool. Owners: Seafarer Ship Co., WH Potter and Sons. Registered Liverpool, became the German 'Seefahrer' about 1910 and appears to have broken up at the end of WW1 or early 1920s].

General notes

One of the ships owned by W.H. Potter and Sons, Liverpool.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.

Historical information

A researcher adds that the ship was in Tacoma, Washington, USA in January 1895. A local carpenter, James H. Miller (b. 1841), was making repairs to the hold, but slipped from a ladder and died. This accident was reported in the 'Tacoma Daily', 6 January, 1895. The ship was in Gatico, Chile for the duration of WWI, and arrived at Ostend in August 1920. It was handed over to the Belgian State Government in 1921, and broken up the following year.
