Summary

'Houto' wooden schooner May 1919 [wooden 2 mast schooner, 128 gross tons, 99 net tons. ON125166. 97.4 x 26.7 x 7.0. Built 1908 John William Davies and Gilbert Mowatt, Sydney, aux. eng. installed 1911 = 45bhp, now 142 gross, 78 net tons. Altered August 1917 = 2 sets engines, 120bhp, now 147 gross, 84 net tons, altered May 1919 153 gross, 88 net tons (apparently when photo was taken) Owned in Sydney until 1910 when transferred to Auckland. When owned by San Christobal Estates Ltd. of Solomon Island and Melbourne, and still registered in Auckland this ship was destroyed by fire at Tulagi, Solomon Island Jan.1, 1924]

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
