Summary

'Aratapu' wooden schooner 122 tons. [wooden brigantine, 122 tons, ON78354, 95.0 x 23.7 x 9.0. Built 1878 James Barbour, Aratapu, NZ. 1917 - 123 gross, 107 net tons. 1920 124 gross, 73 net tons, converted into aux. twin screw brigantine and renamed 'Zita' of Nelson. 1927 reverts to original name, 130 gross, 68 net tons. Owners: Union Steam Saw Moulding Sash and Door Co. registered in Auckland. 1888 Kauri Timber Co. Ltd. 1902 William Cook, Lyttelton. 1917 HL Tapley (later Tapley Shipping Line) registered Dunedin after 1927. Gausted, McDonnell and Co. Waitara. 1931 CNB Mardon, Auckland, registered Suva. Suva register closed March 1932 on sale to Chinese subjects. Register transferred to Callao. This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
