Summary

The iron ship 'Rodney', 1447 tons, moored in Sydney Harbour [iron ship, 1519 tons, ON68905, 235.6 x 38.4 x 22.6. Built 1874 (3) W Pile and Co., Sunderland. Owners: Devitt and Moore, registered London. Sold 1897 to French owners and renamed 'Gipsy'. Wrecked on the Cornish Coast 7 Dec. 1901, when homeward from Iquique with nitrate. Built for and always employed in the Australian passenger trade under British control].

One of the ships owned by Devitt and Moore, London.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
