The wooden barquentine 'Monarch', 98 tons, wrecked at Wardang Island in 1909 [wooden 3 mast schooner, 132 tons (officially, apparently altered c.1903 and reduced to 98 tons, but not recorded) 109.0 x 23.9 x 7.6. ON55958. Built 1871 J Robinson, Moreton Bay Queensland. Owners: Clarke, Hodgson and Co., registered Brisbane: 1872 Robert Chadwick, registered Sydney: April 1874 Messrs. Short: April 1888 Albert Heesh: Nov. 1902 William Playfair, Port Adelaide then CE Fricker, J Campbell and A Hodgeman. Wrecked Wardang Island, SA, April 6, 1909 (not 1907 as shown on caption)

From the volume titled 'South Australian Owned Coasters, Part I'.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
