Summary

Shipping at Sydney in the 1870's, barque 'Metaris' with mizzen mast removed [wooden 3 mast barque, 244 tons, ON18486. 103.4 x 24.6 x 15.1. Built 1857. Sunderland for owners in Wisbeach. Sept. 1863 Thomas Chapman, registered Melbourne:May 1865 Messrs Merriman, registered Sydney: Jan. 1873 John Lyons: May 1881 AJ Lewington and register transferred to Hawaii.] A researcher has said that this is Darling Harbour, looking south-west with floating dock.

This section comprises scenes of Sydney Harbour 1850-1900.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
