Summary

The wooden barquentine 'Examiner', 266 tons, in dock at Port Chalmers, New Zealand [wooden 3 mast barque (aux. steamer 1870-1875) 266 gross, 181 net tons. ON64346. 139.6 x 29.7 x 9.8. Built 1870 William Yabsley, Richmond River, NSW, fitted with 35hp auxiliary steam screw when built. Removed 1875. Owners: William Yabsley, registered Sydney (stranded at Clarence River Heads, NSW May 7, 1872 and only salvaged with great difficulty) Nov. 1878 Charles W Turner (of Christchurch NZ): 1888 Bryden and Jones, registered Brisbane: June 1890 Hans Johnson (of Grafton) registered Melbourne: Nov. 1894 Devenport Steam Ferry Co. registered Auckland, hulked. Used as coal hulk until broken up and register closed in 1910].

From the volume titled 'Australian Owned Sailing Vessels'.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
