Summary

The iron ship 'Waitara', 833 tons, in an unidentified harbour [iron 3 mast ship, 883 gross, 833 net tons. ON47634. 191.3 x 31.4 x 20.9. Built 1863 (11) J Reid and Co. Port Glasgow as 'Hindostan' for British and Eastern Shipping Co., Liverpool. Sold about 1873 to New Zealand Shipping Col. Ltd., and renamed 'Waitara', registered London. 1879 transferred to Lyttelton. Sunk in collision with 'Hurunui' in the English Channel, off Portland, June 22 1883, with the loss of 20 lives].

General notes

From the volume titled 'British Owned Shipping Lines'.

Vessels owned by the New Zealand Shipping Co. Ltd., London, were employed in the England to New Zealand passenger and cargo trade. General cargo was taken to New Zealand and wool, grain and other Colonial produce formed the homeward cargo.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
