The iron ship 'Waitangi', 1128 tons, in an unidentified harbour. Also refer to print PRG 1373/30/101 [iron 3 mast ship, 1161 gross, 1128 net tons. Re-rigged as three mast barque. ON70592. 222.0 x 35.1 x 20.8. Built 1874 (6) J Blumer and Co., Sunderland. Owners: New Zealand Shipping Co. Ltd., registered London (registered Lyttelton 1879-1888) Sold to Norwegians Aug. 1899 and renamed 'Agda' and re-rigged as a barque. Owners: J Wagle, registered Arendal].

General notes

From the volume titled 'British Owned Shipping Lines'.

Vessels owned by the New Zealand Shipping Co. Ltd., London, were employed in the England to New Zealand passenger and cargo trade. General cargo was taken to New Zealand and wool, grain and other Colonial produce formed the homeward cargo.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
