Summary

The iron ship 'Waimea' ex German 'Dorette', 848 tons, in an unidentified harbour [iron 3 mast ship, 871 gross, 848 net tons. ON68507. 194.3 x 31.7 x 19.0. Built 1868 JC Godoffroy, Hamburg and named 'Dorette'. Sold 1874 to New Zealand Shipping Co. Ltd., registered London and renamed. (Some reports say she made one voyage for NZ Company under original name) registered Lyttelton 1879-1888, reverted to London and in August 1895 sold to Norwegians without change of name. Wrecked on coast of South Africa in 1902].

General notes

From the volume titled 'British Owned Shipping Lines'.

Vessels owned by the New Zealand Shipping Co. Ltd., London, were employed in the England to New Zealand passenger and cargo trade. General cargo was taken to New Zealand and wool, grain and other Colonial produce formed the homeward cargo.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
