The iron ship 'Piako', 1075 tons, in an unidentified harbour [iron 3 mast ship, 1136 gross, 1075 net tons, ON73745. 215.3 x 34.0 x 20.5. Built 1876 (12) A Stephen and Sons. Glasgow. Owners: New Zealand Shipping Co. Ltd, registered Lyttelton. 1888 transferred to London. Sold 1892 to German owners without change of name. Missing in 1900 on a voyage from Melbourne towards Cape Town].

General notes

From the volume titled 'British Owned Shipping Lines'.

Vessels owned by the New Zealand Shipping Co. Ltd., London, were employed in the England to New Zealand passenger and cargo trade. General cargo was taken to New Zealand and wool, grain and other Colonial produce formed the homeward cargo.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
