Summary

The iron ship 'Waikato', 1021 tons, in an unidentified harbour [iron 3 mast ship, 1053 gross, 1021 net tons. ON68518. 210.5 x 34.1 x 19.2. Built 1871 (1) J Blumer and Co., Sunderland, Owners: New Zealand Shipping Co. Ltd., registered Lyttelton. Sold to German owners in 1898 and renamed 'JC Pfluger', c.1900 sold to JD Sprekels and became the American barquentine 'Coronado'. Ultimately converted into a barge and sunk on Nov. 20, 1918 under tow off the Canadian coast. Built for the UK-NZ trade].

From the volume titled 'British Owned Shipping Lines'.

Vessels owned by the New Zealand Shipping Co. Ltd., London, were employed in the England to New Zealand passenger and cargo trade. General cargo was taken to New Zealand and wool, grain and other Colonial produce formed the homeward cargo.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
