Summary

The iron barque 'Akaroa', 1334 tons, in an unidentified harbour. [iron 3 mast barque, 1334g, 1298 tons, ON82424. 221.0 x 36.5 x 22.7. Built: 1881 (10) Osborne, Graham & Co. Sunderland. Owners: Shaw, Savill & Co. Reg. Southhampton. 1882. Shaw, Savill and Albion Ltd. c1899/1900 to Norwegian owners without change of name (and well known in the Australian wheat export trade). Survived WWI but appears to have been broken up in the early 1920s. Note Ref 7, v1 is wrong in stating built for Patrick Henderson. This ship was built for Shaw Savill.]

General notes

From the volume titled 'British Owned Shipping Lines'.

This is one of the ships owned by the The Shaw Savill & Albion Shipping Co. Ltd., formed by the amalgamation of two rival shipping firms: Shaw, Savill & Co., and Patrick Henderson's Albion Shipping Co. Their ships continued to engage in the New Zealand emigrant and cargo trade. Keen competition came from the New Zealand Shipping Co.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
