Summary

The iron ship 'Dunedin', 1250 tons, in dock [iron 3 mast ship - rerigged as barque c.1889. 1320 gross, 1250 net tons. ON68085. 241.0 x 36.1 x 20.9 built 1874 (3) R. Duncan and Co. Port Glasgow. Owners Albion Shipping Co. registered Glasgow. 1882 Shaw Savill and Albion Co. Ltd. Missing. Left Oamaru March 19, 1890 bound for London with a crew of 34. She was spotted in the South Pacific but failed to arrive and was believed to have foundered following a collision with ice in the vicinity of Cape Horn. She was built for the UK-NZ emmigrant trade].

General notes

From the volume titled 'British Owned Shipping Lines'.

This is one of the ships owned by the The Shaw Savill & Albion Shipping Co. Ltd., formed by the amalgamation of two rival shipping firms: Shaw, Savill & Co., and Patrick Henderson's Albion Shipping Co. Their ships continued to engage in the New Zealand emigrant and cargo trade. Keen competition came from the New Zealand Shipping Co.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
