Summary

The iron ship 'Auckland', 1245 tons, in an unidentified port. [iron 3 mast ship, 1308 gross, 1245 net tons. ON71658. 239.8 x 36.0 x 20.7. Built 1874 (7) R. Duncan and Co. Port Glasgow. Owners: Albion Shipping Co. registered Glasgow 1882 Shaw Savill and Albion Co. Sold c.1905 to Norway without change of name. Totally wrecked off Possession Island, South West Africa, March 6, 1909 with the loss of all hands. Built for the UK-NZ Emigrant trade by Patrick Henderson's Albion Line, one of the six sisters that all hand long lives. ].

From the volume titled 'British Owned Shipping Lines'.

This is one of the ships owned by the The Shaw Savill & Albion Shipping Co. Ltd., formed by the amalgamation of two rival shipping firms: Shaw, Savill & Co., and Patrick Henderson's Albion Shipping Co. Their ships continued to engage in the New Zealand emigrant and cargo trade. Keen competition came from the New Zealand Shipping Co.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
