Summary

The iron ship 'Invercargill', 1246 tons, in an unidentified port [iron ship, 1310 gross, ON68117, 239.7 x 36.0 x 20.8. Built 1874 (6) R Duncan and Co. Port Glasgow. Owners: P Henderson and Co., who formed Albion Shipping Co. at a later date, and eventually merged with Shaw Savill to form Shaw, Savill and Albion, registered Glasgow. Sold 1905 to Norwegians and left Glasgow Feb. 20 for Oslo but failed to arrive].

From the volume titled 'British Owned Shipping Lines'.

This is one of the ships owned by the The Shaw Savill & Albion Shipping Co. Ltd., formed by the amalgamation of two rival shipping firms: Shaw, Savill & Co., and Patrick Henderson's Albion Shipping Co. Their ships continued to engage in the New Zealand emigrant and cargo trade. Keen competition came from the New Zealand Shipping Co.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
