Summary

The iron ship 'Canterbury', 1245 tons, in an unidentified port [iron 3 mast ship 1309 gross, 1245 net tons. ON68016, 239.7 x 36.0 x 20.8. Built 1874 (5) R. Duncan and Co. Port Glasgow. Owners Albion Shipping Co. Registered Glasgow. 1882, Shaw Savill and Albion Ltd. c.1904/5 sold to Norwegian without change of name. Broken up in 1926 re-rigged as a barque in 1904/5. Built for the UK-NZ emmigrant service. ].

General notes

From the volume titled 'British Owned Shipping Lines'.

This is one of the ships owned by the The Shaw Savill & Albion Shipping Co. Ltd., formed by the amalgamation of two rival shipping firms: Shaw, Savill & Co., and Patrick Henderson's Albion Shipping Co. Their ships continued to engage in the New Zealand emigrant and cargo trade. Keen competition came from the New Zealand Shipping Co.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
