Summary

The wooden barque 'Edwin Fox' as hulk, 836 tons, in an unidentified port [wooden 3 mast barque, 836 gross and net tons. ON4673. 144.8 x 29.8 x 23.6. Built 1853 Calcutta. Owners c.1870 E Gellately, registered London c.1874 Shaw, Savill who later merged with the Albion Company form Shaw, Savill and Albion Ltd., who registered their ships in Southampton,eventually converted into a freezer hulk in New Zealand and the remains were recently subject of an attempt to restore the vessel as a museum].

General notes

From the volume titled 'British Owned Shipping Lines'.

This is one of the ships owned by the The Shaw Savill & Albion Shipping Co. Ltd., formed by the amalgamation of two rival shipping firms: Shaw, Savill & Co., and Patrick Henderson's Albion Shipping Co. Their ships continued to engage in the New Zealand emigrant and cargo trade. Keen competition came from the New Zealand Shipping Co.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
