Summary

The iron ship 'Timaru', 1306 tons, in Port Chalmers [iron 3 mast ship, 1363 gross, 1306 net tons. ON71689, 239.3 x 36.1 x 21.1. Built 1874 (12) Scott and Co. Greenock. Owners: Albion Shipping Co., registered Glasgow, later Shaw Savill and Albion Co. Ltd., c.1899 converted into a freezer-storage hulk in South Africa. (Some reports say she was wrecked under Norwegian ownership Feb. 22, 1907)].

General notes

From the volume titled 'British Owned Shipping Lines'.

This is one of the ships owned by the The Shaw Savill & Albion Shipping Co. Ltd., formed by the amalgamation of two rival shipping firms: Shaw, Savill & Co., and Patrick Henderson's Albion Shipping Co. Their ships continued to engage in the New Zealand emigrant and cargo trade. Keen competition came from the New Zealand Shipping Co.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
