Summary

The iron barque 'Northumberland', 2170 tons, in an unidentified harbour [iron 3 mast ship (formerly auxiliary screw steamship) 2170 gross, 2095 net tons. ON75740, 278.8 x 33.0 x 26.0. Built 1871 Money, Wigram and Sons. London (and fitted with steam engines - 500 hp built by Humphreys, Tennant and Co., ) Owners M Wigram and Sons, registered London. Engine removed 1883 and chartered to Shaw, Savill and Albion Ltd., who purchased the vessel in 1884. Wrecked at Napier, New Zealand, May 11, 1887. Built for the UK-Australia passenger service via Cape Town, but from 1883 engaged in the UK-New Zealand service].

General notes

From the volume titled 'British Owned Shipping Lines'.

This is one of the ships owned by the The Shaw Savill & Albion Shipping Co. Ltd., formed by the amalgamation of two rival shipping firms: Shaw, Savill & Co., and Patrick Henderson's Albion Shipping Co. Their ships continued to engage in the New Zealand emigrant and cargo trade. Keen competition came from the New Zealand Shipping Co.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
