Summary

The composite barque 'Elizabeth Graham', 616 tons, berthed in the S.A. Company Basin, Port Adelaide [composite 3 mast barque, 616 gross, 598 net tons. ON56539. 165.6 x 29.2 x 18.1. Built 1869 (2) William Harkness Middlesbro' Owners: William Graham registered Newport; 1873 transferred to London; 1876 Shaw, Savill and Co. registered Southampton; April 1886. Charles Steven Hodge, registered Dunedin; registered and transferred by Mr. Hodge to Newcastle NSW in 1886; then he transferred to Melbourne; Jan. 1893 F Condy, registered Sydney, then A Anderson and others; 1906 sold to Melbourne Steamship Co. Ltd., who converted the vessel into a coal hulk and renamed it Graham. Registered closed in 1934 when sold for breaking].

General notes

From the volume titled 'British Owned Shipping Lines'.

This is one of the ships owned by the The Shaw Savill & Albion Shipping Co. Ltd., formed by the amalgamation of two rival shipping firms: Shaw, Savill & Co., and Patrick Henderson's Albion Shipping Co. Their ships continued to engage in the New Zealand emigrant and cargo trade. Keen competition came from the New Zealand Shipping Co.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
