Summary

The iron ship 'City of Trevelyan', 1042 tons, in an unidentified port. Also refer to print PRG 1373/30/70 [iron 3 mast ship, 1042 gross and net tons, ON47368. 203.6 x 33.4 x 21.2. Built 1863 (5) Pile, Hay and Co., Sunderland. Owners: GD Tyser, registered London. c.1873 Shaw, Savill and Co., c.1878 register transferred to Southampton. Later company became Shaw, Savill and Albion Ltd. Missing on voyage Glasgow to New Zealand and believed to have foundered off South Africa in June 1888].

General notes

From the volume titled 'British Owned Shipping Lines'.

This is one of the ships owned by the The Shaw Savill & Albion Shipping Co. Ltd., formed by the amalgamation of two rival shipping firms: Shaw, Savill & Co., and Patrick Henderson's Albion Shipping Co. Their ships continued to engage in the New Zealand emigrant and cargo trade. Keen competition came from the New Zealand Shipping Co.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
