General notes

From the volume titled 'British Owned Iron and Steel Barques (III)'.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.

Historical information

Brought to Norway in February 1911 by A/S Kosmos (Chr. Christensen), Sandefjord, and converted to whale oil factory ship with open cookers. Renamed 'Havfruen' and operated in the area around Patagonia. Later she was a supply ship for the catcher/factory ship 'Tulla' on her Antarctic expedition. The ship sank in the area between South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands on 3 December after colliding with ice, while under tow from South Georgia to the whaling grounds. The crew of Havfruen was transferred to 'Tulla' and brought to safety in Grytviken.
