Summary

The wooden barque 'Loongana', 296 tons, at what was then known as the New Wharf, Hobart, Tasmania. In the middle background is St George's Church, in the foreground are the still recognisable buildings of Salamanca Place [wooden 3 mast barque, 294 gross, ON57598, 127.0 x 26.0 x 12.9. Built 1879 (4) J McGregor, Hobart, owners: A&J McGregor, Hobart. c. 1891 Loo TomFin (South Sea Island merchant) registered Sydney. Wrecked at Butaritari Lagoon, Gilbert Islands, January 1912. (Name is Aboriginal for 'Swift').

From the volume titled 'British Owned Wooden Barques'.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
