Summary

The wooden barque 'Indus', 1319 tons, moored at Gravesend, U.K. [3 mast barque, 1319 tons. ON13884, 242.1 x 38.5 x 21.1. Built 1847 Money, Wigram and Sons, Blackwall, as a paddle wheel steamship 927 tons, 208.0 x 33.9 x 21.2. Lengthened in 1852. Engine removed in 1863. Owners: Peninsular and Oriental SN Co. registered London, Dec. 1869 Eastern and South African Telegraph Co., scuttled off Mombassa Dec. 8, 1894. P&O used the vessel as a store ship from 1863 until sold].

From the volume titled 'British Owned Wooden Barques'.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
