Summary

The wooden barque 'Hope', 537 tons, docked in an unidentified port [wooden 3 mast barque, 552 gross tons. ON65899. 152.2 x 30.2 x 17.9. Built 1871 (11) J Crown, Sunderland. Owners: T&W Eills, registered Liverpool]. According to a researcher, the photograph is taken near the sugar works, Melbourne, in the 1870s. The 'Hope' in centre would have been given notice of photo being taken as signal letters & other flags are flying. Name of American barque to right is not known.

From the volume titled 'British Owned Wooden Barques'.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
