Summary

The London registered wooden barque 'Osman Pacha', 497 tons, docked in an unidentified port. The Osman Pacha was built in 1878 [wooden 3 mast barque, 509 gross tons, ON77078, 142.6 x 29.8 x 17.9. Built 1878 (2) Dyer, Shoreham. Owners: R Berridge, registered London. Missing. On a voyage from Newcastle to Mauritius with coal she passed Goode Island April 21, 1892 and was not seen again. Goode Island is near Thursday Island]. A researcher suggests that the port shown is Melbourne as the legend on the building behind is 'Manufacturers Fergusson & Mitchell Stationers'. This firm operated in Australia and NZ in the late 19th century.

From the volume titled 'British Owned Wooden Barques'.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
