General notes

One of the ships owned by John Gambles, Cumberland.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.

Historical information

Information from a family member: 'Richard Unsworth was an apprentice on this barque and was at the helm when she was wrecked. He went on to become a Master Mariner and spent many years sailing and working from Hong Kong for the Scottish Oriental Steamship Co. When all this company's ships were sold to Norddeutscher Lloyd he was told he could remain as captain of his then ship, the SS Keong Wai, if he took German nationality. He declined and went ashore to work for the Kowloon Wharf and Godown Company until his retirement in 1913. Like many seafarers, he had an eventful life being wrecked, falling overboard twice and going AWOL in New Zealand from his first ship to live with some Maoris before being caught and hauled back aboard the Coronilla'.
