General notes

One of the ships owned by D. and J. Sproat, Kirkcudbright.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.

Historical information

The Silver Craig: 322 tons, docked in an unidentified port [wooden 3 mast barque, 322 tons, ON50272, 177.3 x 26.2 x 16.8. Built 1864 (7) Briggs, Pallion, near Sunderland. Owners: Sproat Brothers, registered Liverpool].

The Times newspaper, London, England, 11 November 1880 page 12 reported; "A telegram from Montevideo, dated November 8, states that the Silver Craig, British Barque, is ashore at Polonio, Brazil, and reports indicate that she cannot be saved. The Silver Craig is a vessel of 322 tons, built at Pallion in 1864, and owned by Messrs. J and D. Spront, (sic) of Kirkudbright. She sailed from Liverpool on September 1 last for Montevideo."
