Summary

The iron ship 'Marpesia', 1490 tons, at Port Adelaide. [This ship was originally 'County of Kinross' built in Glasgow in England 1878. Sold to K.Bruusgaard in Norway 1906 and renamed 'Marpesia'. Sold again 1921 in Buenos Aires and renamed "Salinera"] [iron ship, 1490 tons, ON54960, 234.2 x 38.4 x 23.9. Built 1866 (4) J Reid and Co. Port Glasglow. Joseph Heap and Sons, registered Liverpool, 1882 Australasian Shipping Co. Ltd. (Gracie, Beazley and Co.) registered Liverpool. Sold 1897 to Norwegian owners without change of name. Destroyed by fire and explosion in the North Atlantic, during December 1904].

One of the ships owned by Joseph Heap and Sons, Liverpool.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
