Summary

The four masted steel barque 'Howth', 2244 tons, anchored in an unidentified harbour [possibly previously called 'Horn Shell'] [steel 4 mast barque, 2244 tons. ON99741, 284.4 x 41.9 x 24.5. Built 1892 (3) Workman, Clark and Co. Ltd. Belfast. Owners: Sir R Martin and Co. registered Dublin later CE Martin. 1905 J Edgar and Co (Howth Shipping Co.) registered Liverpool. c.1913 Windram and Co.; During WW1 fitted as a tanker and renamed 'Horn Shell' by Anglo Saxon Petroleum Co. registered London. Broken up early 1920s].

One of the ships owned by J. Edgar and Co., Liverpool.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
