The steel barque 'Dunearn', 1632 tons, at anchor. The ship has 'bald-headed' or stump topgallant masts [steel barque, 1632 tons. ON104536, 245.2 x 37.5 x 22.6. Built 1894 (6) Russell and Co. Port Glasgow. Owners J Dunn and Co. later J Hayes and Co. Missing - sailed from NSW in 1910 with coal for Vacparasso].

General notes

From the section 'The Closing Years of Sail'. Steel 'carriers' built during the last decades of the 19th century, when sail was fighting a losing battle against steam competition.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
