Summary

The United States wooden schooner 'Blakely', 751 tons, at anchor. The schooner rig became extremely popular in the United States during the closing years of the nineteenth century and during the first two decades of the twentieth century. Many United States wooden multi-masted schooners and barquentines visited Australian ports, usually timber laden.

General notes

From the section 'Late 19th Century Wooden Sailing Vessels'. Long after British shipyards had changed over to the construction of iron and steel ships for deep water service, other countries continued to build wooden vessels. This applied particularly to North America and Scandinavian countries, where suitable timber was plentiful. At the close of the century British wooden shipbuilding was confined largely to the construction of coasters.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
